Sick of tape not doing what it should when you're painting and decorating? Here's our tried and tested list of masking tapes for painting and decorating to help you get a pro finish and take the frustration out painting.
So where to start? Firstly there is not one tape which does it all. We'll break it down by application so you know which tape to use in which situation. We also look for the best value and quality There might be better tapes out there BUT if the price isn't justified, we won't use it.
Carpet Masking and General Masking Tape
If you're painting skirting boards over carpet, or are looking for a general masking tape, then the next two tapes are for you. This could be one of the most commonly use tapes and always good to have in the tool bag. We'll also use it for masking up door handles and general masking where we're not worried about paint bleeding under slightly.
The Duck General purpose tape used to be our number one go to tape which always performed great. However in recent weeks the price has increased and its been harder to purchase. Due to this the Deltec tape is a great alternative.
Taping Around Windows, Skirting Boards, Door Frames
Where you have two surfaces meeting like a skirting board to a wall, or a door frame to a wall then we use two different tapes and both work great.
The Fossa tape is a great tape to work with. It's quick and easy to apply and comes off surfaces easy too. Paint can occasionally bleed underneath but if it's critical we will use the Frotape however, try it and you'll see why we love it. The Frogtape as mention is for anything which is more critical.
Taping onto walls
For delicate taping like onto walls or ceilings then there are two go to tapes.
Frog tape is well know now and everyone is aware of it's benefits and uses. One word of caution! ALWAYS test it on a walls to ensure it won't pull the paint off underneath. If you have walls which haven't been painted many times before (like in a new build house) then the chances are it will pull the paint off the plaster. This is where the Deltec Purple tape comes in. This is the most delicate of delicate tapes. VERY low tack. If you are doing a critical line we would recommend painting your base colour over the tape first to ensure your top colour doesn't bleed underneath.
Masking Film
We'll keep this simple. There are two main type of masking film we use.
Indasa Cover Roll
3M Hand Masker
The 3M hand-masker is more for the professionals. The Indasa Cover Roll comes in various lengths and is a great way of masking large objects like kitchen cabinets, lights and TV's.
